RJD makes its mark in Manipur, Speaker licks dust

Imphal, Feb 27 (UNI) The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) made its presence felt in Manipur when its candidate Hellaluddin Khan humbled Speaker Maniruddin Sheikh of the Congress by a margin of 280 votes.

Of the three seats declared till now, the Congress, the NCP and the RJD bagged one each.

While, Congress president president Gaikhangam was reelected from 54 Nungba AC constituency, defeating his nearest rival Gangmumei Kamei (Independent) by a margin of 5000 votes, Th Navakumar of the NCP got the better of sitting MLA K Tomba of the Congress from Khundrakpam seat by a margin of 500 votes.

The Independents were also leading in two seats.

Three villages of Melghat Tiger Reserve relocated

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) Three villages out of a total of 22 situated in the Melghat Tiger Reserves have been relocated, Minister of State for Environment and Forests Namo Narain Meena told the Rajya Sabha today. These villages occupied an area of 788.75 sq. km of the sanctuary, he said, in a written reply. The Minister said an amount of Rs. 63.00 lakh has been provided under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Project Tiger to the State for relocation.....

Absence of governance, corruption cause of Cong loss: Khanduri

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) Senior BJP leader Maj Gen (retd) BC Khanduri, who was head of the election affairs in Uttarakhand, today ascribed his party's good performance in the state to ''total abesence of governance and rampant corruption during the Congress rule.'' ''The results are not unexpected going by the mood of the people we gauged during the electioneering in the hill state,'' Maj Gen Khanduri told UNI when asked to comment on his party's victory which looked now certain.....

Inflation costs Congress Punjab and Uttarakhand

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) The Congress paid a heavy price in the assembly polls as a wave against inflation and incumbency swept away the party in Punjab and Uttarakhand today, marking a further erosion in the grand old party's base in the Hindi-speaking belt. As results of the recently concluded assembly elections in three states poured in, Manipur could prove to be the silver lining for the beleaguered party, with the Congress stealing a lead in a closely-fought contest.
