PM orders free air service for stranded passengers at Jammu,Srinagar

Jammu, Feb 27 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today ordered two days free air service for stranded passengers between the capital cities -- Jammu and Srinagar -- of the state from tomorrow, official sources said.

Keeping in view the continuous road blockages on Jammu-Srinagar national highway due to rainfall, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad talked to Mr Singh on telephone and requested him for providing free air service to the stranded people, sources said.

The Prime Minister immediately agreed and issued orders for two days free air service on February 28 and March 1 through special Army aircraft to stranded passengers between Jammu and Srinagar, sources said.

The planes will resume operation at 1100 hrs tomorrow, as the state administration has requested all the stranded passengers to contact respective Divisional Commissioner (of Jammu and Kashmir divisions) on telephone and get their names enlisted accordingly.

Officer arrested for accepting bribe

Patna, Feb 26 (UNI) Sleuths of State Vigilance Bureau today arrested industrial extension officer of Banka, Shambhunath Bhagat, from his office for accepting Rs 4000 as bribe. An associate of the officer, Rajeev Ranjan Jha, was also arrested during the raid. Additional Director General of the State Vigilance Bureau Neelmani said a trap was laid on the basis of a complaint regarding demand of illegal gratification by Mr Bhagat for issuance of a certificate. Two persons killed in road mishap

Krishnagar, Feb 27 (UNI) At least two persons were killed and three others critically injured when a truck overturned near Gede on the Indo-Bangla border here. Police was attributed the accident to the bad conditions of the roads. According to sources, CPWD was carrying construction work of the road. However, the condition of the road deteriorated following sunday's downpour. Driver of the truck, Bharat Biswas(29), died on the spot. The four labourers on board were rushed to the Krishnagar.....

PCC plea to Pondy Govt on VAT

Puducherry, Feb 27 (UNI) The Puducherry Chamber of Commerce (PCC) today urged the administration to provide compensation to traders in the form of grant or subsidy for the levy of four per cent Central Sales Tax (CST) if the government introduced Value Added Tax (VAT). In separate letters to Lt Governor Mukut Mithi and Chief Minister N Rangasamy, PCC President N Govindasamy said the administration had taken steps for introduction of VAT beginning April one making CST levy unnecessary.
