NHRC notice to Bihar Health Services DG

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report about a mentally ill patient being denied treatment due to want of money in Bihar, the National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the state Health Services Director General and sought a report on the incident.

The Commission has directed the DG to submit the report within two weeks.

NHRC said if the contents of the report are true, they raise a serious issue of human rights violations of the poor suffering from ailments.

According to the February 12 report, Rajeev Giri fell ill about eight years ago due to negligence of doctors who attended on him and became mentally ill.

The report said his father had to sell off their agricultural land for the Rajiv's treatment and he also took a loan from local moneylenders.

''At present Rajeev is not being provided medical treatment or medicines due to want of money. He has been tied in chains and is fighting for life,'' it added.
