Mother seeks help for daugther sold to settle gambling debt

Hyderabad, Pakistan, Feb 27 (UNI) The mother of a teenage Pakistani girl, allegedly sold by her (late) father when she was one-year-old, has threatened to immolate herself if the girl, now 16, is not saved from being handed over to a middle-aged man.

The English-language Dawn newspaper quoted Ms Nooran of Zeal Pak Colony at Latifabad in Hyderabad as saying that her late husband Rahib was a gambler and he had sold their one-year-old daughter Rasheeda for Rs 10,000 to one Lal Hyder after incurring heavy debt in gambling. She said that her parents gave her Rs 10,000 and she returned the money to Lal.

Ms Nooran said that Lal was pressuring her to marry off Rasheeda to his son, adding that her sons Peeral and Abdul Wahab were receiving threats.

She threatened to immolate herself if she and her family were not saved from the harassment and provided protection from Lal, his son Ghani and others.

Taking notice of the mother's appeal, Hyderabad District Police Officer Ali Ahmed Junejo ordered registration of a case against ten people. Police teams have been constituted for the arrest of the accused.

Residents hold fast on land acquisition for SEZ

Kancheepuram, Mar 13 (UNI) Residents of Oragadum today observed a day's fast to condemn the government's move to acquire land for automobile special economic zone (SEZ) to be established at the SIPCOT Industrial estate. As many as 1,000 people, including 300 women, participated in the agitation organised at the Oragadum-Chennakuppan Junction. Traders closed shop to express solidarity with the agitationists. According to the residents, the authorities are in the process of acquiring 2,500 acre of land for the project and letters.....

Give access to aid organisations, UN urges Myanmar

United Nations, Feb 28 (UNI) A United Nations human rights expert has urged authorities in Myanmar to grant aid groups immediate access to affected civilians. While making the appeal, the official expressed concern about the humanitarian and human rights implications of rising hostilities between government forces and rebels in southeastern Kayin state in the country. Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, the special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, said in a statement that ''humanitarian assistance should not be made hostage.....

Excess kerosene would be supplied till March in TN district

Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, Mar 13 (UNI) The Kancheepuram District Collector Pradeep Yadav today said an extra litre kerosene would be supplied to the family ration card holders for the month of March, 2007. In a statement here Mr Yadav said the facility would be extended to the card holders till the end of the March in the entire district under the Public Distribution Scheme(PDS). UNI.....
