Maoists raid police picket, kill policemen, decamp with arms

Lakhisarai, Feb 27 (UNI) At least four policemen were killed and as many injured when activists of the proscribed CPI (Maoist) attacked a Bihar Military Police(BMP) picket at Khaira village under Kajra police station today.

Lakhisarai district Police Superintendent R Malar Vijee said before attacking the police picket, the ultras blasted a portion of the railway tracks near Daitabad between Dhanauri and Uren stations on Kiul-Jamalpur section under Malda division of Eastern Railway, disupting rail communication till 1000 hours this morning.

The extremists also blew off a bridge on the approach road to Khaira.

In the fierce encounter between the extremists and the BMP, four policemen were killed and as many injured, while the Maoists decamped with one carbine and two SLRs.

Mr Vijee, however, said the exact number of weapons looted would be ascertained after checking the armoury.

Power generation loss due to high cost of alternative fuels

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) The supply of gas to power stations remained inadequate and the use of alternative fuels such as naphtha and High Speed Diesel (HSD) was poor due to its high cost that resulted in generation loss, the Economic Survey said today. The overall electricity generation by power utilities during 2006-07 was, however, targeted to go up by 6.7 per cent to 663 billion kwh in 2006-07, the survey said. While thermal generation exhibited substantial acceleration.....

Telecom biggest ''success stories'' of market reforms: Survey

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) The Economic Survey today billed the telecom sector as the biggest success stories of market oriented reforms which is now one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. The survey tabled in the Parliament said the telecom tariffs which were among the highest in the world less than four years ago have now dipped to being among the lowest and tele-density has also increased from 12.7 per cent in March 2006 to 16.8 per cent.....
