Majority of Pondy people issued health cards: Minister

Puducherry, Feb 27 (UNI) A majority of people in Puducherry have been issued health cards under a special scheme to enable them get treatment on priority at the government general hospital here, Health Minister E Valsaraj said here today.

Inaugurating the first state-level conference of domestic servants affiliated to the AITUC, Mr Valsaraj said the administration would cover the entire ten lakh population in the next two months with beneficiaries getting free drugs at the hospital.

Women's welfare had been accorded priority in various plans and programmes and establishment of welfare board for construction workers was an important step taken by the govenrment.

He categorically said the govenrment would go ahead with all it's programmes relentlessly and ensure that no section of the people were affected during their implementation.

India accounts for 20 p c maternal, infant deaths: Ganguly

Vijayawada, Feb 28 (UNI) Indian Council of Medical Research Director-General Prof N K Ganguly today said the country accounted for more than 20 per cent maternal and infant deaths. Speaking at the XI annual convocation of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NUHS) here, he said the present infant mortality rate in India was 62 per 1000 live births, while neonatal mortality (infant deaths within the first 28 days) accounted for 40 deaths per 1,000 live births. Canecharge on dalit wedding procession

Chhatarpur, MP, Mar 13 (UNI) Three police personnel, including a town inspector (TI), were suspended after a canecharge here on a dalit wedding procession where a high-decibel band was being played. About a dozen people, including the groom, women and children, were injured in last night's incident. Incensed processionists allegedly assaulted Superintendent of Police Chanchal Shekhar, Town Inspector Arun Dubey and other personnel.
