Five people killed in road mishaps

Bangalore, Feb 27 (UNI) Five people, including a Rapid Action Force (RAF) driver, were killed and eight others injured in two different road mishaps in Karnataka, today.

Police said four people were killed and an equal number injured when a tempo, in which they were travelling, collided with a private bus at Kappalamadagu village, about 80 km from here.

The injured were admitted to the Government Hospital in Kolar.

In another incident, the driver of a RAF vehicle was killed on the spot and four others injured when the vehicle rammed into a roadside tree at Eraiahnahallipalya on the outskirts of the city.

The injured were admitted to Baptist Hospital. City Police Commissioner Neelam Achyutha Rao visited the hospital and wished speedy recovery to the injured.

131 deportees from Saudi arrive

Chennai, Feb 21 (UNI) As many as 131 Indians detained in Saudi Arabia on charges of illegal stay and other offences, reached here today by a Saudi Airlines flight at Anna International airport. Airport sources said the deportees from Bihar, Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu left for their respective destinations. They told reporters that proper food was not provided in Saudi Arabia. However, they were not subjected to any harassment. UNI.....

Engg student fatally run over by lorry

Chennai, Feb 21 (UNI) A 21-year-old final year engineering college student was fatally run over by a sand lorry at Krishna Nagar on the Tambaram-Mudichur Road near here today. Police said M Gopinath returning home on his motorcycle after attending a computer class when the mishap occurred. The lorry driver did not stop the vehicle until he was intercepted by the police with the help of public near suburban Velacherry. However, the driver jumped out of the vehicle and escaped......

39 tahsils drought-hit in MP

Bhopal, Feb 22 (UNI) Thirty-nine tahsils spread over nine districts of Madhya Pradesh have been declared drought-hit. In a written reply to Mr Ajay Singh (Congress), Revenue Minister Kamal Patel said in the Assembly today that employment-oriented relief work was underway. ''The state's foodgrain production was 159.5 lakh tonnes and 142.9 lakh tonnes in 2003-04 and 2004-05 respectively,'' Agriculture Minister Chaudhry Chandrabhan Singh said in response to a question by Mr Sajjan Singh Verma (Cong).
