Economic Survey finds quality of students very poor

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) A large number of students in the country today learn by class eight what they should have learnt in class two.

Highlighting this finding, the Economic Survey for 2006-2007 presented in Parliament by Finance Minister P Chidambaram today has stressed the urgency of improving the quality of education.

Just enrolling students would be meaningless without ensuring that they learn in the school, it said.

While it has noted with appreciation schemes like the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan for universalisation of primary education and the Mid Day Meal scheme for checking drop out rate, it has said that focus should also be placed on increasing accountability in educational institution and regular assessment of the quality of education imparted.

''Improvement in the quality of services is an urgent necessity for all social sector programmes,'' the Survey said.

It, however, said there are some success stories too in different parts of the country that need to be replicated.
