EAC refused to issue environment clearance to Tipaimukh dam

Aizawl, Feb 27 (UNI) Action Committee for Tipaimukh Project (ACTIP) has renewed their demand of scrapping the mega project, following the Expert Appraisal Committee's (EAC) refusal to issue environmental clearance for Tipaimukh dam along Mizoram-Manipur border.

An ACTIP release here today stated EAC for River Valley and Hydroelectric Projects of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF) did not accord environmental clearance to the project for the second time last week.

The EAC had earlier also considered the project for environmental clearance on November 25 last year. However, after critical examination of environment-related issues, out of the list of 31 issues recommended by NEEPCO and Manipur Pollution Control Board EAC rejected the proposal.

ACTIP further said that the 17-page clarification for the observations made by MoEF, submitted by NEEPCO, was not totally clear. Hence, the committee is still dissatisfied with the application made by NEEPCO.

''Crucial informations were missing in the report and therefore, the committee has requested NEEPCO for necessary investigation and survey to complete before the project can be considered,'' the release added.
