Dullo, Jagir Kaur among prominent losers

Chandigarh, Feb 27 (UNI) Congress president Shamsher Singh Dullo and former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Bibi Jagir Kaur (SAD) were among several prominent losers in the Punjab assembly elections.

While the Congress chief was defeated by a greenhorn Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Vikramjit Singh in Khanna (Reserved), the SGPC chief was humbled by three-time loser Sukhpal Singh Kaira of the Congress in Bholath constituency.

Another Congress heavyweight Industries Minister Avtar Henry lost to first-time contestant K D Bhandari of the BJP in Jalandhar North.

Other ministers of the Amarinder Singh government who had to bite the dust included IT Minister Mohinder Singh Kaypee, Public Health Minister Harnam Dass Johar, Transport Minister Raghunath Sahai, Local Bodies Minister Ch Jagjit Singh, Animal Husbandry Minister Jagmohan Singh Kang, Technical Education Minister Ramesh Chander Dogra, Excise and Taxation Minister Sardul Singh, Forests Minister Hans Raj Joshan, Horticultre Minister Rakesh Kumar Pande.

Deputy Speaker Darbari Lal (Cong) also tasted defeat in the Amritsar (Central) constituency.

Among the prominent SAD leaders were Balwinder Singh Bhundar, Kuldeep Singh Wadala, Tota Singh, Gurdev Singh Badal and Harmel Singh Tohra, son-in-law of late SGPC chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra.

SAD (Amritsar) chief Simranjit Singh Mann and his son Imaan Singh also lost the elections.

Others who faced defeat were BJP veteran Madan Mohan Mittal and state BSP chief Avtar Singh Karimpuri.

Counting of votes for byelection begins

Bhopal, Mar 11 (UNI) Counting of votes polled for the byelection to the Lok Sabha from Gwalior and Sidhi constituencies and to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly from Udaypura constituency in Raisen district began at 0800 hrs today. About 42 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise in the March 8 bypoll in Gwalior, 48.87 per cent in Sidhi and 52 per cent in Udaypura. Counting of votes polled for Gwalior began in Gwalior, Datia and Shivpuri district headquarters, for Sidhi.....

Vijay Bahuguna wins Tehri-Garhwal LS seat on his third try

Dehra Dun, Feb 27 (UNI) Salvaging some respect for the Congress, which lost the Uttarakhand assembly election today, party candidate Vijay Bahuguna today won the Tehri-Garhwal parliamentary constituency seat defeating BJP's Manujendra Shah. It proved third time lucky for Mr Bahuguna, a former Judge in the Maharashtra High Court and son of the redoubtable hill leader and former UP CM, the late Hemwati Nandan Bahaguna, who had contested from here unsuccessfully in the last two elections. BJP tantalising short of majority, looking to lure UKD, Ind

Dehra Dun, Feb 27 (UNI) Capitalising on an anti-incumbency wave against the Congress regime and receiving a shot in the arm before the crucial UP polls in April-May, the BJP is all set to form the next government in Uttarakhand, though tantalisingly short of a majority on its own.
