Congress-CPI gain absolute majority in Manipur

Imphal, Feb 27 (UNI) Manipur offered a consolation prize to the Congress as the party in alliance with the CPI gained absolute majority in the ninth assembly.

Halting the anti-incumbancy wave in Punjab and Uttarakhand, the Congress on its own won 30 seats in a house of 60 while the Communist Party of India bagged four.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh's charisma proved magic for the party as it snuffed out the Opposition challenge convincingly. The Chief Minister not only created a record of sorts by surviving the entire five-year term in a state which had earned the reputation of a "state of defection", but his political acumen enabled the party to race towards majority.

Congress Govts in Punjab, Uttarakhand set to be dislodged

Centre has hiked allocation for TUF: Elangovan

Kancheepuram, Mar 11 (UNI) The Centre had allocated Rs 911 crore for the Technology Upgradation Fund (TUF) for 2007-08, Union Minister of State for Textiles E V K S Elangovan today said. Speaking to medipersons after inaugurating a modern silk testing centre here, Mr Elangovan said this representated a substantial increase over last year's allocation of Rs 541 crore. The government also planned to set up textile parks at Palladam, Kumarapalayam, Madurai and Erode for which a sum of Rs 20.....

SAD-BJP gains Punjab, BJP Uttarakhand, Cong gets Manipur

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) Cashing in on the anti-incumbency wave and the public outcry against inflation the Akali Dal-BJP combine stormed to power in Punjab today and the BJP secured a clear mandate to rule Uttarakhand. The Congress, which met its waterloo in the two northern states, however had the consolation of holding on to power in the northeastern state of Manipur.
