BJP MPs tear government statement on Quattrochi in RS

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha was today adjourned for the day with the Opposition MPs tearing the statement of the Government on Italian fugitive Ottavio Quattrocchi, an accused in the Bofors pay-off scam.

When the House met for the second time, after being adjourned till 1230 hrs, the Opposition members moved to the Chair and expressed their dissatisfaction even as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachauri placed his statement detailing the measures taken by the authorites after they received the message regarding the detention of Quattrocchi at Iguazu International Airport on February 7.

During this time, Mr Rudramani Pani of BJP went to Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan to lodge his protest and was soon joined by Mr Yashwant Sinha, who was a Foreign Minister in the NDA government.

Mr Pani tore the statement and threw it into the air. His action was soon followed by rest of the BJP MPs and some of the torn papers fell on the Chairman's table. When the situation turned uncontrollable, the Chair adjourned the House for the day.

Govt undecided on Mashelkar report on patent laws: Ashwani

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) The Government today said it was yet to decide whether to accept or reject the recommendations of the technical expert group on Patent Law Issues headed by Dr R A Mashelkar which has got embroiled in a controversy over allegations of plagiarisation. Stating this in a written reply, Dr Ashwani Kumar, Minister of State for Industry, told the Lok Sabha that the Chairman of the technical expert group had requested the Government by a letter.....

Quattrocchi issue rocks both Houses of Parliament

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) The issue of Italian fugitive Ottavio Quattrocchi, main accused in the Bofors scam, today rocked both Houses of Parliament, forcing adjournment despite the government's assurance to make a statement on it today itself. While the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 1200 hours, the Rajya Sabha till 1230 hours. Both Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and Rajya Sabha Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat faced strong protests from the Opposition which was adamant on making the statement on.....

Eco Survey:Growth leading to social progress,transparency needed

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) Asserting that the sustained high levels of economic growth provides a unique opportunity and momentum for faster social sector development and creates employment, the Government today called for greater accountability and transparency through the PRIs to ensure good governance. In the Economic Survey 2006-07 laid in the Lok Sabha amid protests by the opposition on the Quattrocchi issue, the Government emphasised monitoring the progress and effective implementation of the various social sector schemes through the outcome.....
