Assembly poll results not a referendum on Centre: PM

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the defeat of the Congress in the assembly polls in Punjab and Uttarakhand would have no bearing on the Centre as it was not a ''referendum'' against the UPA.

''I am not saying there is no fallout. However, these elections have no bearing on the Centre'' as these were fought on state-specific issues, Dr Singh told reporters in Parliament House.

Petroleum minister welcomes Rail budget

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora today praised the Rail Budget 2007-08, presented by Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and described it as growth-oriented. In a statement, Mr Deora praised Mr Prasad for bringing out a Budget, which on the one hand reduces fares and freight and on the other hand brings in enhanced profits. UK Commission for Racial Equality to protect Indian Docs interests

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) The Commission for Racial Equality in Britain will take ''all possible steps'' to protect the interests of Indian doctors in UK, who are facing the threat of loss of jobs because of a controversial government legislation, and will intervene if the policy impacts the medicos adversely, Commission Chairperson Kay Hampton said here today. Two-day primary teachers' agitation concludes

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) Scores of primary teachers from several states today held demonstrations and courted arrest as part of their two-day campaign to protest against ''unjust'' provisions of the Model Right to Education Bill and press for their other demands. The demonstrators, under the banner of the All India Primary Teachers' Federation (ALPTF), held a rally in which teachers from all across the country, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Assom, Tamil Nadu and Punjab, participated. Several teachers courted arrest.....
