Tata, Essar projects to benefit Bastar people: Raman

Raipur, Feb 26 (UNI) Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh today said the proposed mega steel projects of Tata and Essar group, to be set up in the tribal Bastar, would directly benefit the locals with the state's rehabilitation policy focusing on their employment.

''Our rehabilitation policy is not just for the Tata and Essar projects but it is for the benefit of those affected by these development projects,'' he said, while replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the governor's address in the Vidhan Sabha.

Mr Singh said it has been decided to strictly follow the provisions in the rehabilitation policy, which focused mainly on providing regular employment to those directly affected by any projects.

''Instead of treating a joint family as a single unit, we are treating each family as a separate unit for the purpose of rehabilitation,'' he said, adding this would help benefit maximum number of people.

The Chief Minister said special attention was also being paid to providing training and enhancing skills of the people concerned so that they could be absorbed in these projects.

Referring to 'Salwa Judum' -- the ongoing anti-naxalite movement in Bastar -- Mr Singh said the state government would continue to extend full cooperation to the spontaneous people's campaign against three-decade old naxalite violence.

Claiming that 'Salwa Judum' would help contain naxalite activities in Bastar, he said now the people were new realising the strength and importance of such a movement against the rebels.

The movement against the naxals would spread even to other places, he added.

The naxalite problem in tribal Sarguja region -- bordering Jharkhand -- was well under control with no major incidents of violence being reported from the area, Mr Singh said.

After the CM's reply, the house adopted the motion of thanks to the governor's address by a voice-vote.
