Passengers escape unhurt from bus on fire

Tiruchirapalli, Feb 26 (UNI) More than 25 passengers, including two members of the crew, had a miraculous escape, when the mini bus in which they were travelling accidentally caught fire at Vaiyampatti village near here last night.

Police sources said the bus was proceeding to Chennai from Udumalpet, when the mishap occurred.

The rear portion of the bus accidentally cauight fire. The driver was unaware of at and kept speeding the bus. However, some college students, travelling in a bus behind, noticed the fire.

They overtook the omni bus and informed the matter to the driver.

All the passengers were asked to alight before the flames engulfed the entire bus. Since, the accident took place late in the night, no help was available to extinguish the inferno.

However, the personal effects of passengers were burnt to ashes.

On information, police rushed to the spot. The reason for the fire was not immediately known.

Tension prevails following clash between police, advocates

Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, Feb 21 (UNI) Tension prevailed for more than two hours at Chengam town, near here today, following a clash between police and a group of local advocates in the police station. Police said, one Murugan a local advocate went to Chengam police station in connection with a bail matter and a wordy duel occurred between Ms Tamilarasi the women Sub inspector and the advocate. It was alleged that the advocate broken a chair. Following this, other policemen overpowered.....

Police arrest agitating CPM workers

Puducherry, Feb 26 (UNI) The volunteers of CPI (M), including secretary Perumal and Tamil Nadu State Council member T Murugan, were arrested while staging separate road blockades in Puducherry and Karaikal to press their demands. The agitators demanded, among other things, curbing of price hike of essential commodities, provision of 14 essential commodities through ration shops and the procurement of farm produce directly by the government. Meanwhile, 162 persons were arrested following a road blockade against the setting up of satellite.....

Search on in J'khand, Bihar, WB to nab kidnappers

Bokaro, Feb 22 (UNI) Police have intensified joint search operations in neighbouring Bihar and West Bengal to nab criminals involved in the abduction of an iron trader from Jharkhand. Superintendent of Police Priya Dubey said random raids were also being conducted in the sensitive places of the state. Refusing to divulge details about the progress made so far by the police in this case, the SP asserted that the raids yielded certain vital leads, which would help solve the case.....
