NDA stages walkout, Railway Budget put on hold

New Delhi, Feb 26: Opposition National Democratic Alliance today disrupted theRail Budget presentation by Railways Minister Lalu Prasad to force theGovernment to come out with its explanation on the suppression of thenews of detention of Italian fugitive Ottavio Quattrocchi wanted inconnection with the Bofors kickbacks case.

Parliament has been adjourned till noon as NDA stages walkout.

This was decided at a meeting of NDA leaders chaired by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha L K Advani.

Briefing reporters after the meeting held in Advani's chamber in Parliament House, BJP's Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha Sushma Swaraj said the Question Hour would not be allowed to function in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

"We will raise the issue right from the word go," she said.

BJP Parliamentary Party Spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra said that the leaders also decided not to allow transaction of Question Hourfor today and tomorrow in support of the demand. Prime MinisterManmohan Singh had the responsibility of issuing clarification about17-day delay in informing about Quattrochi's arrest in Argentina, hesaid. The Government should also inform Parliament when the fugitivewould be brought to India and the efforts made to get him extradited.

The leaders will meet again on February 28 to take stock of the situation and decide on their future course of action.

The meeting was also attended by NDA Convenor George Fernandes,Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Jaswant Singh, Shiv Sena leadersManohar Joshi and Anant Geete and Janata Dal (United) President SharadYadv and Mr Dinesh Trivedi of Trinamool Congress.
