MERC takes serious note of grid failure

Mumbai, Feb 26 (UNI) Taking a serious note of yesterday's grid failure, the secretary of the Maharashtra Electric Regulatory Commission (MERC) Malini Shankar has asked all the institutions concern to give their comments by tomorrow and a detailed report by March nine.

Ms Shankar said in case of such major failures, MERC must be informed immediately.

A MERC spokesman said according to the electricty act 2003 the information should have been furnsihed to MERC but since it was not done it has become a ''non-compliance'' matter.

MERC has asked Maharashtra State Electricity Board, Reliance energy, Tata power and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport to give their comments on the matter.

MERC secretary has asked them to furnish the details about system conditions (prefault) period to the occurrence, brief description of the occurrence, sequence of events, the areas affected due to generation loss and steps taken for restoration of supply.

A technical snag at 'Padghi-Nagothane,' yesterday resulted in tripping of power in parts of Maharashtra and Western suburbs of Mumbai and the fault was rectified in phases after nearly four hours.

FAM opposed to VAT on essential commodities

Mumbai, Feb 26 (UNI) The Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM) has flayed the proposed imposition of value added tax (VAT) on essential commodities while cautioning that such a move would aggravate inflation. Anand, Gujarat, Feb 26 (UNI) A child birth here served two heart-touching purposes as a surrogate mother delivered a baby and in exchange got money to save her ailing son. Thomas (36), and his Korean wife Kim (34), decided to go for a surrogate mother and selected a woman from Kolkata.
