Industry should not be at the cost of agriculture: Basu

Kolkata, Feb 26 (UNI) Industrialisation should not be done at the cost of agriculture even as industry is considered to be the main source of employment generation, West Bengal Agriculture Commission Chairman R N Basu said today.

Speaking to newsmen after meeting Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Mr Basu said since the state had very limited of agricultural land because of its high density of population, not more than two per cent of it should be earmarked for industry.

Even as the state was self sufficient in agricultural production, the farmers should have greater access to improved technology to boost the productivity, Mr Basu said.

He, however, refused to elaborate on the probable impact on the Indian market following the entry of major private agricultural entrepreneurs.

Weather warms up in Manipur

Imphal, Mar 6 (UNI) Manipur experienced a pleasant weather as the mercury rose by few notches here today. The sky was clear and there was no rainfall, MET officials said. The minimum temperature was around 8 degrees Celcius while the maximum was about 27 degrees. The humidity was around 69 per cent, sources added. UNI.....

Two landmines and Naxal literature recovered

Bokaro, Mar 6 (UNI) Two landmines weighing four kgs each, wire and alarge number of naxal literature were recovered near Jhumra hill in Jharkhand's Bokaro district. Superintendent of Police Priya Dubey here said that acting on a tip-off police raided the lower areas of the extremist affected Jhumra hill and recoverd the landmines and other materials kept for ultra operation. Meanwhile, in another incident police also recoverd inflammable materials used in explosion from the adjoining areas of Galoari and Amar village.....

NTPC in fray for Globeleq's assets

New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) Country's largest power generator National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC) has placed a bid for British power major Globeleq's assets in Egypt. The power major today said it ''is submitting a non-binding indicative bid to the United Kingdom-based Lehman Brothers for acquisition of assets of 682.5 MW Sidi Krir Power Project in Egypt through 100 per cent equity acquisition of Globeleq Maghreb''. Globeleq has appointed Lehman Brothers as the investment bankers to the deal. Tata.....
