DefMin, EAMin mourn death of Amitabh Chakrabarti

New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) Defence Minister AK Antony today expressed deep sorrow at the untimely death of Registrar of Newspapers in India Amitabh Chakrabarti in Varanasi following a heart attack.

In a condolence message, Minister Antony said the stint of Chakrabarti as head of the Publicity Wing of the Defence Ministry would be remembered for a long time to come. ''Chakrabarti, who served commendably in various capacities, has left a void which will be hard to fill....'' Amitabh Chakrabarti died early yesterday in Varanasi following a severe heart attack. He was 59.

In a separate message, External Affairs Minister -- and former Defence Minister -- Pranab Mukherjee described Chakrabarti as ''a sincere and upright officer whose career in the Indian Information Service was exemplary for its brilliance''.

Earlier in the day, Mr Mukherjee and Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutta visited the residence of Chakrabarti to pay their respects.

The body of Chakrabarti was consigned to the flames here this afternoon.

Defence Secretary Dutta and a large number of friends, relatives, colleagues and mediapersons paid their last respects at the Lodhi Road cremation ground.

Mr Soren's counsel appealed that his client be shifted to RIMS. Public Prosecutor Anil Mahto contended that the reason behind shifting him to RIMS was not clear as earlier medical reports recommended rest for the incarcerated JMM leader. The court sought details mentioning whether treatment of Mr Soren was possible in Dumka and fixed March 15 as the next date for hearing.

It was recommended to send him to RIMS for the tests as the district lacked the required equipment.....

Veerappan's wife pens biography on slain brigand

Chennai, Feb 27 (UNI) Slain forest brigand Veerappan's wife Muthulakshmi is penning the biography of her 'in'famous husband -- hoping to bring 'his other side' to light.

''As a wife, only I know the true and complete story of Veerappan. So, I decided to embark on the mission myself,'' she told UNI.

The biography would dwell at length on their romance and marital life particularly on the days spent together in the dense forests while on the run.

Jharkhand Janadhikar Manch march to Raj Bhavan on delimitation

Ranchi, Feb 26 (UNI) The Jharkhand Janadhikar Manch today marched to Raj Bhavan here expressing concern over the Delimitation Commission's proposal to reduce SC/ST seats besides exclusion of dome town areas in Ranchi and Jamshedpur from scheduled areas.

Hundreds of JJM activists from diffrent districts gathered at the historic Morabadi ground and took out a rally that culminated near the Raj Bhavan.

The rally then turned into a public meeting where several speakers expressed their views.

POLITICS-RLD-SP TWO LAST NEW DELHI

Replying to a question, Mr Munawwar Hasan, however, said that he would not be tendering resignation from the SP, nor from Parliament. ''It is for the SP to do what it wants to. I just don't feel the need of submitting my resignation,'' said Mr Hasan. ''After all neither Mr Natwar Singh and nor Mr Raj Babbar resigned from their parties,'' quipped Mr Singh in a lighter vein.

First woman mayor for RMC

Rajahmundry, Feb 26 (UNI) Ms Adireddy Veera Raghavamma of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was today unanimously elected as the first woman mayor of Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation (RMC) here.

During the election, 31 corporators raised their hands in support of Ms Raghavamma.

Election Special Officer and East Godavari Collector M Subramanyam administered oath of office and secrecy to 50 corporators earlier.

Later, Mr B S Prasad also of the TDP was unanimously elected as deputy mayor.
