CM, deputy CM hail rail budget

Mumbai, Feb 26 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil have lauded the Rail Budget saying it has made good provisions for Maharashtra and Mumbai.

In a statement here, Mr Deshmukh also congratulated Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav for the Rs 20,000 crore profit that the Railways has generated.

He said approval of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project Phase II, extension of Vidarbha Express upto Gondia and the Parli-Latur Passenger upto Osmanabad were good news for Maharashtra.

Mr Patil, however, said more funds are required for the Marathwada region for development of railways there. Both the leaders appreciated the announcement of several new trains in Maharashtra.

4-day 'Phaguni Poonam Mela' from Feb 28 at Dakor

Anand, Feb 26 (UNI) The four-day ''Phaguni Poonam mela'', that attracts lakhs of pilgrims, will begin on February 28 at Dakor. The Dakor administration has geared itself up for the event as it is estimated that around 15 lakh pilgrims will visit this temple town during these four days. Kheda district collector R R Varsani today held a meeting with senior police officials, councillors and members of the Dakor temple managing committee to review the arrangements. Two naxalites killed in encounter in Gadchiroli

Nagpur, Feb 26 (UNI) Two naxalites were killed in an encounter with the police in the forests of Gadchiroli district in Vidarbha region today. According to the police, the encounter occurred in the jungles near village Sokela in Bhamragadh tehsil of the district this morning during a combing operation by three police patrol parties. The combing was being carried out after receiving information that around 40 naxalites were camping in the area, the police said. The naxalites opened fire on.....

Opposition disrupts Guv's speech in Budget Session

Guwahati, Feb 26 (UNI) The Budget Session of the Asom Assembly began today on a noisy start with the Opposition forcing the Governor to conclude his address in less than two minutes, alleging gross failure of the government on all fronts. Governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajai Singh dwelt on the 'resurgence' of the state, emphasising that Asom's financial recovery and success in bringing insurgent groups to dialogue was being recognised all over before he was shouted down by the combined Opposition......
