Centre allocates Rs 1,140 crore for NE under BRGF

Aizawl, Feb 26 (UNI) The Centre has allocated Rs 1,140 crore, under the Backward Regions Grant Fund (BRGF), for the northeast region, official sources said today.

The Centre has also decided to spend an additional Rs 15 crore in each of the districts of the country for infrastructure development.

Sources said that the centre would support 250 districts, including 76 districts of NE region for development, education, healthcare, rural transportation, irrigation, rural electrification and drinking water facilities under BRGF.

According to sources, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has launched BRGF last week to remove the regional imbalance and upgrade the poor infrastructure of the neglected regions.

''BRGF aims to fulfill the prime responsibility of local development of all backward parts of the country, including the northeast, because its an initiative to bridge the regional disparities,'' sources said.

BRGF will be implemented totally through Panchayati Raj institutions following district plans prepared at grass-root level to restore the Panchayati Raj system to the centre of planning process.

Sandalwood smuggler shot at

Mysore, Mar 15 (UNI) The city police shot at an alleged sandalwood smuggler, who attempted to attack the police personnel, in the city today. Police said based on a tip-off about cutting a sandalwood tree on the premises of the Postal Training Centre here, police attempted to catch a fleeing smuggler Ravi. He opened fire at the police in an attempt to escape and the police retaliated. Ravi was admitted to the K R Hospital and operated upon for bullet.....

Guv stresses increase in CD ration in J'khand

Ranchi, Feb 26 (UNI) Expressing concern over low credit-deposit ratio in Jharkhand, Governor Syed Sibtey Razi today said the banks should stick to the norms clearly framed in this regard. Inaugurating the new office building of Syndicate Bank at Hazaribagh road, the governor pointed out that only 40 per cent of the total deposit was spent in the state. He said according to existing norms, the banks were required to spend 60 per cent of the total deposits for developmental activities.....

HC dismisses Congress MLA's application

Chennai, Mar 15 (UNI) Madras High Court today dismissed an application filed by Congress MLA P Veldurai, raising preliminary objections to the election petition filed by defeated AIADMK candidate P H Manoj Pandian, seeking to set aside the election of Veldurai from Cheran Mahadevi Assembly constituency during the May 2006 poll. Mr Justice S R Singaravelu dismissed the preliminary objection petition filed by Veldurai and posted the election petition for trial to April 16. In his order, the judge said the.....
