Apang advocates 'one Arunachal one identity'

Itanagar, Feb 26(UNI) Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Gegong Apang today called for the preservation of the rich culture and traditions of the state and single identity of the Arunachalee tribes through joint celebration of festivals.

Addressing the Nyokum Yullo festival of the Nyishi community here, the chief minister said that the festivals promote unity and integrity in the tribal community.

Pointing out that the rich cultural heritage handed down by the ancestors should be preserved to maintain the distinct identity of the "classless" society of the state, Mr Apang said such festivals help to promote and rejuvenate the society.

The elders have to take a proactive role in popularising the folklores, folk songs, folk dances, proverbs and the rituals of the tribal society, he added.

He stressed that celebration of any indigenous festival of a major tribe should not be confined to the towns but spread beyond the state boundary.

Commenting on the indigenous foods and drinks served on the occasion, Mr Apang said the local brews and cuisines were much better then any European brand which would carve a niche in international arena if promoted.

Rituals and cultural programmes, including Rikam Pada dance performed by artists from various tribes, were the major highlights of the day-long celebration.
