Agitation over Cauvery verdict continues

Mysore, Feb 26 (UNI) The agitation by farmers and others against the final verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal entered the 22nd day today in the Cauvery basin districts of Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar.

In Mandya district, farmers and various organisations staged a dharna after blocking the Tipu Express, Tirupati train and Push-Pull train for some time. A procession of lorries was taken out under the leadership of Pandavapura MLA Puttaraj in Mandya. Chinakurali village in Pandavapura town observed a bandh. Protests and dharnas were also held at K R Pet, Maddur, Srirangapatna and Pandavapura in the district. The relay hunger strike by the Cauvery Hitharakshana Samithi continued at the Silver Jubilee park.

In Mysore, the activists of Mysore and Chamarajanagara Districts Arya Idigara Sangha took out a procession, protesting against the verdict. Members of the Mysore Bar Association launched a two-day hunger strike in front of the Gandhi statue near the court.

In Chamarajanagar district, protests and dharnas were held at Chamarajanagar town and Gundulpet. Students also joined the stir.

Sops for women, senior citizens in Rail Budget

New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) Amid continuous protests by the NDA, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today presented in the Lok Sabha the Railway Budget 2007-08, declaring that cash surplus will reach Rs 20,000 crore by March 31, 2007 as compared to last year's surplus of Rs 13,000 crore. Eight new Garib Raths to be introduced

New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today announced introduction of eight "Garib Rath" (air conditioned trains for common people) and 32 new trains. Presenting the Railway Budget for 2007-08 in the Lok Sabha, he said eight new Garib Rath trains would be introduced in keeping with the policy of linking all state capitals with this train which is intended to provide ac comfort at an affordable rate. Mr Prasad announced the "Garib Rath" scheme in last year's budget.....

Video, CCTVs to be installed to detect explosives on trains

New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) To improve safety and security in the wake of the recent blasts on Samjhauta Express, Railways would install door frames and hand-held metal detectors, CCTVs and smart video cameras to detect explosives at many sensitive divisions. Number of trained dogs will be increased in the existing squads, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad announced in his budget speech in the Lok Sabha today.
