Rs 20.50 crores being released for Uri earthquake affected families

Srinagar, Feb 25 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced it will release another Rs 20.50 crores for the victims of October 8, 2005 killer quake in Uri in north Kashmir.

Rs 52 crores have already been provided as relief to 8500 affected families so far, an official spokesman said today.

He said Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Basharat Ahmad, who was visited Uri yesterday, was informed that Rs 20.50 crores would be distributed within the coming 15 days and the concerned Sub- District Magistrate has been directed to speed up the distribution process.

Mr Ahmad also inaugurated the residential building constructed by Health Voluntary Organisation, a local NGO.

About 50 houses, one community centre, one school and one health centre have been constructed by the said NGO for the quake victims.

About 1400 peoples died in the quake and about 1.5 lakh houses were damaged in the quake in north Kashmir. However, the magnitude of damage on the other side of the Line of Control in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) was much higher. The quake also damaged the Uri-Muzaffarabad road, forcing authorities to suspend the Karvaan-e-Aman bus for about three months.

Woman falls to death,3 injured, 13 houses gutted in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 25 (UNI) A woman was killed when she fell down from second storey of a shrine in the outskirts of the city today, a police spokesman said. He said a woman Raja Begum, was cleaning shrine at Jehab Sahib Soura, which also houses a holy relic of Prophet Mohammad, when she accidently slipped and fell down from the second storey. She was immediately shifted to nearby Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) at Soura where, she succumbed to her.....

Children in gas-affected colonies suffer from deformities

Bhopal, Feb 25 (UNI) More than two decades after the Bhopal Gas tragedy, children continue to suffer from cerebral palci, cracked lips and other deformities from birth due to polluted groundwater and chemical waste dumped by the Union Carbide factory in 36 gas-affected wards of the state capital. A survey by the state capital-based Chingari Trust, involved in the rehabilitation of these children, reported most children in these areas were mentally challenged. Haryana Police releases modified sketches of 2 suspects

Panipat, Feb 25 (UNI) The Haryana Police today released modified sketches of the two suspects in the twin blasts in the Samjhauta Express which left 68 people dead on February 18. DIG (crime) R C Mishra, who heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the blasts, said the sketches had been modified after collecting some vital details of the suspects and after consulting experts.
