RBI to pay interest on CRR

Mumbai, Feb 25 (UNI) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has accepted the demand of banks to pay interest on the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR).

The RBI will pay interest on the CRR in excess of 3 per cent, an official release here said. It will pay 1 per cent interest with retrospective effect from February 17, while 2 per cent interest will be paid on CRR maintained during December 9, 2006 to February 16, 2007. For the CRR maintained between June 24, 2006 and December 8, 2006, the interest to be paid will be at 3.5 per cent, the release said.

The RBI will also not penalise banks that had failed to maintain the minimum CRR balance of 3 per cent during June 22 to December 8, 2006, the statement added.

The RBI had stopped paying interest on excess CRR balance from June last year following the amendment of the RBI Act.

Kalam makes transit halt at airport before leaving for Belgaum

Panaji, Feb 25 (UNI) President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam today made a transit halt at the Naval enclave in Goa's Dabolim airport before leaving for Belgaum in neighbouring Karnataka. Earlier, the President arrived here from Coimbatore by a special aircraft Rajhans. Secretary Protocol Diwan Chand and Inspector General of Police (IGP) N S Randhawa, besides naval Commodore P K Panda received Mr Kalam. He went to Karnataka to attend an official meetings at Belgaum, Gulbarga and Bidar. UNI.....

Dharni boycotts ZP elections to protest irrigation project

Nagpur, Feb 25 (UNI) To register their opposition to a proposed irrigation project in Dharni taluka of Amrawati district, not a single candidate has filed nomination papers for the forthcoming Zilla Parishad (ZP) and Panchayat Samiti (PS) elections. Amravati Collector Ravindra Jadhav told UNI that not a single nomination form was received for the five ZP and ten PS seats in the tehsil as the deadline for submitting papers passed yesterday. The people in the tehsil are opposed to the building.....

BMC to start Phase-II cleaning work of Mithi River next month

Mumbai, Feb 25 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will start the Phase-II work of widening, deepening and desilting of the Mithi River next month. The corporation will also undertake construction of retaining walls and roads alongside the riverbanks at the cost of Rs 218 crore. ''It is expected to complete by May 2008,'' official sources said here today. The Phase-II has been divided in two major segments. The 11.8 km-long first segment stretches from Vihar Lake to the CST Road.....
