PGIMER Virology Department becomes Apex Referral laboratory

Chandigarh, Feb 25 (UNI) Department of Virology, PGIMER, Chandigarh has been identified as one of the Apex Referral laboratory for the advanced diagnosis of Dengue, Japanese encephalitis, Chikungunya and other vector borne viral diseases in India.

The frequent reappearance of these diseases in larger proportions was the basis of establishing the Apex Reference Laboratory with state-of-the-art facilities in this region.

Under this programme, the virology department, besides advanced diagnosis, will be conducting hands on training for the laboratory diagnosis of these diseases from tomorrow.

Sentinel surveillance hospitals belonging to the states of Rajasthan, Punjab and Union Territory, Chandigarh will be participating in the programme, a PGIMER statement said here yesterday.

This laboratory will provide rapid diagnosis at the time of epidemic situations in this region. Continuous surveillance activity on the vector borne viral diseases in the states by the trained personnel will help the region with the expert support of the reference laboratories, it said.

Majority of Pondy people issued health cards: Minister

Puducherry, Feb 27 (UNI) A majority of people in Puducherry have been issued health cards under a special scheme to enable them get treatment on priority at the government general hospital here, Health Minister E Valsaraj said here today. Inaugurating the first state-level conference of domestic servants affiliated to the AITUC, Mr Valsaraj said the administration would cover the entire ten lakh population in the next two months with beneficiaries getting free drugs at the hospital. Bird flu laboratory starts operation in Pune

Pune, Feb 28 (UNI) A bird-flu testing laboratory, the first in Maharashtra, became functional here today. Animal Husbandry Commissioner Vijay Kumar told reporters, scientists and investigation department will conduct the tests at the laboratory, set up at a cost of Rs two crore. So far, 12,000 samples have been tested for bird flu but were found negative. The Pune-based laboratory will cater to Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Goa. 50 ill after having adulterated food

Siddharthnagar, Feb 28 (UNI) At least 50 people took seriously ill after allegedly consuming adulterated food in Muthwal block here. The incident occurred late last night at a wedding ceremony in Ahrauli village, police said today. The victims were later rushed to a hospital. Meanwhile, the food sample has been sent for examination, they said. UNI.....
