Kalam meets ailing Manekshaw in hospital

Coimbatore, Feb 24 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today met former Army Chief and Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw at a military hospital in Welington in Nilgiri District and enquired about his health.

Field Marshal Manekshaw,95, was hospitalised a few months ago due to various ailments.

Gen Manekshaw played a major role in the surrender of Pakistan soldiers during the Indo-Pak war in 1971. He was appointed as the Chief of the Army Staff in 1968 and is the first Field Marshal of the Indian army. He was in the firts batch of cadets to pass out of the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun.

Kalam makes transit halt at airport before leaving for Belgaum

Panaji, Feb 25 (UNI) President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam today made a transit halt at the Naval enclave in Goa's Dabolim airport before leaving for Belgaum in neighbouring Karnataka. Earlier, the President arrived here from Coimbatore by a special aircraft Rajhans. Secretary Protocol Diwan Chand and Inspector General of Police (IGP) N S Randhawa, besides naval Commodore P K Panda received Mr Kalam. He went to Karnataka to attend an official meetings at Belgaum, Gulbarga and Bidar. UNI.....

Dharni boycotts ZP elections to protest irrigation project

Nagpur, Feb 25 (UNI) To register their opposition to a proposed irrigation project in Dharni taluka of Amrawati district, not a single candidate has filed nomination papers for the forthcoming Zilla Parishad (ZP) and Panchayat Samiti (PS) elections. Amravati Collector Ravindra Jadhav told UNI that not a single nomination form was received for the five ZP and ten PS seats in the tehsil as the deadline for submitting papers passed yesterday. The people in the tehsil are opposed to the building.....
