India preparing special package for LDCs: Nath

New Delhi, Feb 25 (UNI) India is preparing a special market access package for the least-developed countries (LDCs), which would be announced shortly.

According to Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath, the package for the LDCs has been submitted to the Union Cabinet for consideration.

But, he said, it was a standalone package and had nothing to do with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) multilateral trade talks.

He was speaking after the release of the World Trade and Development Report 2007 here yesterday, which espouses solidarity among developing countries through South-South cooperation (SSC).

The report, prepared by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), a New Delhi-based think-tank, says the current impasse in the Doha Round of multilateral talks under the aegis of the WTO offers an opportunity for making the processes of agenda-setting and decision-making ''inclusive and democratic'' UNI

Rural Dev., Finance Ministries differ on expansion of NREGA

New Delhi, Feb 25 (UNI) Even though the government is planning to extend the coverage of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act keeping its promise of ''inclusive growth', the difference persists between the Finance and Rural Development Ministries over the extent to which it can be done. The Rural Development Ministry has demanded that coverage of NREGA, at present being implemented in 200 districts, be increased to 200 more districts while the Finance Ministry is insisting that it be extended to 50.....
