IJMA refuses to meet Union demand, seeks govt intervention

Kolkata, Feb 25 (UNI) Taking a tough stand against the workers' indefinite strike, Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) today made it clear its ''inability to hike the wage structure further'' and demanded immediate intervention of the state government.

Making its stand clear about the workers unions' demand for further hike in their wages, IJMA Deputy-Chairman R K Poddar claimed that the state based jute mills had already been paying 'standard wages' to the vast majority of their workers 'without having any obligation' towards achieving standard production.

''This has a telling effect on the overall health of the industry,'' he added.

Ridiculing the chain effect of the indefinite strike which entered the 52nd day today in all the 50 odd jute mills in the state, Mr Poddar said as a result the peak demand season for jute products was coming to an end without any productivity and forcing severe loss to most of the jute mills.

Under the circumstances, the IJMA Vice-President said, the Association members had expressed their inability to meet the workers' demand and urged them to call off their strike immediately and start production.

Also seeking immediate intervention of the state government in resolving the crisis, which had also thrown the life of thousands of people associated with the industry into jeopardy, Mr Poddar said in absence of any suitable steps taken by the government, the situation in the state based jute industry would turn from bad to worse.
