Couple abscond with jewels in TN

Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, Feb 25 (UNI) A newly-married couple were allegedly absconding with 30 soverign jewels in Kancheepuram today.

Police said Perumal(30) hailing from Karunguzhi village in this district and employed in a rice-mill got married to Rohini(23) hailing from Kancheepuram Chalabogar street.

Perumal went to his father-in-law's house at Kancheepuram with his wife and stayed there for a while before proceeding to Kancheepuram bus terminus, stating that they were proceeding to Melavalampettai in the district.

The couple have not reached home so far.

Based on a complaint lodged by Perumal's father Kanniappan, a case had been registered and investigation was underway, police added.

Police save 489 cattle, arrest 14 persons in Amreli

Rajkot, Feb 26 (UNI) The police have arrested 14 persons near Amreli for allegedly ferrying 489 cattle in five trucks to a slaughter house at Surat. Police Sub Inspector B B Parmar today told UNI they had received an information that the cattle were being transported to Surat Slaughter House from Madressa in Amreli yesterday. Acting on the tip-off, a police team, led by Mr Parmar, mounted a vigil on the Amreli highway and intercepted the trucks carrying the livestock.....

Bangladeshi under trial prisoner escapes from jail

Shillong, Feb 26 (UNI) An under trial prisoner of Bangladeshi origin has escaped from Meghalaya's Tura district jail. The escapee, identified as Mohammad Robi alias Pandit, from Bangladesh's Kharamura village managed to escape yesterday by scaling the wall in West Garo Hills District, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bikram Marak, told UNI over the phone. Mr Marak said he was arrested for illegally entering India. Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt to nab the escapee. UNI.....

HC directs Bihar to file reply on Shahabuddin's petition

Patna, Feb 26 (UNI) Patna High Court today directed the Bihar government to file reply, within four weeks, on a petition of incarcerated RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin. The petition sought amalgation of FIRs filed against him on the basis of evidences gathered during the raid conducted at Shahabuddin's residence in Pratappur village in Siwan district on April 24, 2005.
