Two farmers commit suicide in west Vidarbha region

Akola, Feb 24 (UNI) two debt ridden farmers in west Vidarbha region, comprising Akola, Washim and Buldhana district, committed suicide last week.

According to police, Devidas Dattuji Umbarkar(45) of village Bhor in Akola district set himself on fire on February 18.

He was admitted in the district hospital where he succumbed to the burn injuries on February 23, police said. He is survived by two sons.

The constant failure of crops and huge loan taken from money lender forced him to commit suicide, family sources said. He received 88 per cent burn injuries, police added and said a case of accidental death was registered and further investigation was on.

In the second incident reported in Washim district, Ramji Nathhuji Ingle (30), a resident of village Umra Shamsoddin in Washim taluka bordering Washim district ended his life by consuming poison at his house yesterday, police said.

He was referred to the Washim general hospital. But died on way to the hospital, police said.

The deceased had nine acres of dry land and was burdened with loan of Rss 25000 from district Central co-op bank, his family sources said.

He is survived by wife, one-year-old daughter and mother, police said and added that a case of accidental death was registered and further investigation was on.

SC approached for immediate extradition of Quattrocchi

New Delhi, Feb 24 (UNI) An application was filed in the Supreme Court today seeking directions to the CBI to take immediate steps for the extradition of Ottavio Quattrocchi, an accused in Bofors Gun scandal, from Argentina without missing the deadline of limitations. Applicant Ajay Agrawal, in his application, has alleged that CBI deliberately concealed the fact of arrest of Quattrocchi by the authorities in Argentina on February 6, and this fact was not disclosed to this court on February 12.....

CBI in a quandary over Quattrocchi's extradition

New Delhi, Feb 24 (UNI) After 18 days of wrangling to get Ottavio Quattrocchi extradited, the Central Bureau of Investigation now finds itself in troubled waters as the agency had earlier declared that it had no ''concrete evidence'' against him in the multi-crore Bofors pay-off scam. Earlier, the investigating agency had in January 2006 asked a British court to defreeze the two accounts of the Italian businessman with a balance of three million Pound Sterling and one million US dollars respectively,.....
