Scientists should work with Sidha practioners: Kalam

Udhagamandalam, Tamil Nadu, Feb 24 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today called upon scientists and technologists to work with traditional Sidha practioners and suggest how medial bio-informatics could help the traditional medicine developers.

Addressing the second international conference on Pharmaceutical Sciences, Technology and Practice at JSS College of Pharmacy here, he said the scientists and technologists should help practioners and manufacturers of Sidha medicine to systematically prove and get necessary approvals for use of medicines in different parts of the world.

The President said he recently met Dr P M Selvaraj from Kolimalai Siddasramam, who was a traditional Sidha practioner, practicing for the last 50 years.

With his experience in 5000 varieties of herbal and medicinal plants he was teaching, practising and disseminating knowledge and scientists could coordinate with practitioners like him, the President suggested.

India's strengths predominantly resided in its natural and human resources, the President said adding India rank among the top few nations having a rich bio-diversity.

In the herbal area there was potential applications for developing multiple products for health and nutrition, prevention and cure of diseases.

Bomb hoax delays Nethravathi Express

Kozhikode, Mar 8 (UNI) The Thiruvananthapuram-bound Nethravathi Express was delayed here today for security checks which lasted for about half an hour, after an anonymous call was received that a bomb had been planted on the train. However, after a detailed search in all the compartments by sniffer dogs and bomb squads, the call proved to be a hoax, police said. Dredger hits Venduruthy bridge

Kochi, Feb 24 (UNI) The Venduruthy bridge here was damaged when a dredger working near south end of the reclamation area in Willingdon Island hit it. Sources said the incident occurred when the Dredger Kamal XXVIII was being towed and while approaching the bridge, the tow line snapped.
