Protest against death of wathcman

Jammu, Feb 24 (UNI) Police today resorted to lathicharge, lobbed tear gas shells and fired in the air to quell an agitated mob protesting against the death of a watchman after he was allegedly slapped by a police officer at Bantalab here.

Police sources said Assistant Sub-Inpector Lala Chand, who allegedly slapped Kewal Ram on Friday, was suspended and arrested following his death.

Around a dozen people, including a Deputy SP (Akhnoor) S Sharma, were injured in the clashes as protestors fought a pitched battle with police, the sources said.

People gathered in the morning here and pelted the police with stones, the sources said, adding the police then fired five rounds in the air to disperse the agitators.

Meanwhile, the police claimed that the watchman died due to a heart attack.

Srinagar-Jammu highway to remain closed till Feb 26

Srinagar, Feb 24 (UNI) The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, life line to Kashmir, which was closed on February 21 due to landslides and shooting of stones, will remain closed till February 26. A traffic police official said the decision to close the highway till February 26 has been taken to allow the Border Roads Organisaion (BRO) to repair its damaged portion. CID official shot at in Srinagar

Srinagar, Feb 24 (UNI) Militants shot at and critically wounded a CID official of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the down town this evening. Official sources said militants entered the house of Special Grade Constable (SGC) Mushtaq Ahmad of CID department of Police at Soura and fired at him. He was immediately shifted to the hospital in a critical condition. UNI.....
