Police fires several rounds to calm AMU students, 35 wounded

Aligarh, Feb 24 (UNI) Police today fired several rounds in the air to disperse a mob of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students after they clashed with the police, following a dispute with a local builder.

The clash, that lasted for four hours, left at least 35 persons, including 14 policemen and 20 students, severely wounded.

A group of AMU students fought a pitched battle with the police, resorting to firing, stone pelting and setting afire a police outpost, several anti-riot vehicles and shops.

The genesis of the clash lay in a minor argument between a builder in Jakria market and a group of students. Later, the two engaged in a clash, besides allegedly firing at each other.

The polices were informed as the matter turned violent.

Meanwhile, the injured had been admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.

Senior police officials including Agra range DIG had reached Aligarh to take stock of the situation, which is said to be under control.

The builder and his brother have been arrested, while large number of police and PAC jawans have been deployed in the troubled area.

Boat driver remanded in judicial custody

Kochi, Feb 24 (UNI) A local court today remanded Raju (46), driver of the boat thay capsized in the Periyar river killing 18 people on board on Tuesday, in a 14-day judicial custody.
