Police arrest boat driver

Kochi, Feb 24 (UNI) Police today arrested Raju (46), the driver of the ill boat which capsized in the Periyar river killing 18 people on board on Tuesday.

Police said Raju was arrested this morning from his wife's house in Pothenikaddu, near Thodupuzha here.

He was arrested under Section 304 of the IPC and would be produced before the Kothamagalam court this evening, police said.

The victims, including 15 school children, were part of a group of 118, including ten teachers and two non-teaching staff from St Antony's School, who were on an excursion to Thattekkadu.

Bhatt's office firing case suspects to be chargesheeted tomorrow

Mumbai, Feb 25 (UNI) Five alleged members of the Ravi Poojari gang, suspected to be behind the firing at Bollywood film producer Mahesh Bhatt's office last year, will be chargesheeted tomorrow. Santosh Appu Poojari (33), Ramesh Sudhershan Kanojiya (27), Arvind Mohan Devadiga (34), Nityanand Vithal Shetty (22) and Sampat Shankar Kotiyan (23) will be produced before MCOCA court Judge M R Bhatkar to seek an extension of their remand. Investigating officer Udaysingh Rathod told UNI the chargesheet will be filed tomorrow......

New bid to stop flesh trade

Kolkata, Feb 25 (UNI) West Bengal is leading the nation to urge the Centre in formulating a comprehensive policy to check trafficking of women and children to and from the country and initiate talks with Bangladesh, Nepal and other SAARC countries in this regard. West Bengal Commission for Women (WBCW) Chairperson Jasodhara Bagchi told UNI that the Commission was mobilising public opinion against the crime through seminars and other programmes across the state and soon forward their proposal to the Centre.....
