PC shipment to India crosses five million: IDC

Bangalore, Feb 24 (UNI) The Indian Personal Computer market recorded a 25 per cent growth in 2006 and crossed the five million mark, IDC reported today.

In the preliminary release of the IDC's India Quarterly PC Tracker for the fourth quarter of 2006 issued here, IDC India Country Manager Kapil Dev Singh said the growth indicated the maturity the Indian PC market had attained. ''The market is characterised by the emergence of clear-cut segments, vendors running segment-specific marketing programmes and the market ceasing to be just price driven.'' The future of the PC market depended on how quickly and strongly new need drivers evolved.

The rankings remained unchanged in the overall Client PC (Notebooks and Desktops combined) market, with HP retaining the top spot with a market share of 21 per cent, followed by HCL at 14 per cent and Lenovo at nine per cent in terms of unit shipments.

In the total desktop PC market, HP led the market in 2006, followed by HCL and Lenovo. In the total Notebook PC market alone, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 38 per cent in unit shipments. Lenovo and Toshiba were at second and third spots with market shares of 17 per cent and ten per cent respectively.
