Infiltration a problem for South also: Major Sivasankar

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 24 (UNI) Making it clear that the southern parts of the country are not free from infiltration attempt by terrorists, Major General B Sivasankar, General Officer Commanding Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, today said there was a need for constant vigil on the security aspects in the region.

Addressing a Civil Military Liaison conference here, he said activities of Pakistan's ISI were assuming alarming dimensions and these activities coupled with the increasing nexus between fundamentalists and criminal fringe elements were creating problems in the area.

The recent reports of ISI operatives and recovery of huge caches of ammunition from the southern states added credence to the fears, he added.

He said Kerala could not ignore the present developments in the South in view of the state's healthy mix of communities, vast coastline and the presence of neighbouring countries.

Inaugurating the conference, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan assured all kind of logistic support for the welfare of serving and retired defence personnel in the state.

Congolese Defence Minister Calls on Antony

New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) In yet another assertion of India's emerging excellence in defence, Congo today showed keen interest in bilateral cooperation in this field. Visiting Congolese Defence Minister Jacques Yvon Ndolou evinced this interest when he called on his host and Indian counterpart AK Antony here. Bangladesh Naval Ship calls at Kochi

Kochi, Feb 26 (UNI) Bangladesh Naval Ship (BNS) Umar Farooq today arrived here on a two-day goodwill visit. According to an official release, the ship commanded by Captain M Mozammel Haque was received by Naval Officer-in-Charge Commodore A T Lucose. Captain Haque called on Commander-in-Chief VAdm J S Bedi and the Chief of Staff RAdm Rajender Singh of the Southern Naval Command. The officers of the two navies had interaction during receptions held at the Command Mess and onboard the Bangladesh.....

Guj Govt to provide jetty space for Coast Guard ships:CG Commander

Porbandar, Feb 27 (UNI) The Gujarat Government will amend its ports policy to ensure jetty space to Coast Guard ships and work for development of all-weather ports to enable the Maritime Force to protect the Indian waters more effectively. This assurance was given by Chief Minister Narendra Modi when Coast Guard's senior officials met him at Gandhinagar recently, said Gujarat Coast Guard Commander G P Raj. Mr Raj was talking to reporters on the sidelines of ''A Day at Sea'' programme.....
