CPI demands suspension of police officials

Hyderabad, Feb 24 (UNI) The State Council of the CPI today demanded the suspension of Anantapur district Superintendent of Police Stephen Ravindra for ''beating agitating students with his boot'' and the two town Sub Inspectors for ''brutally beating'' students, who held a rally demanding Judicial inquiry into the suicide of a girl student allegedly due to ragging.

The State Council meeting was chaired by MLA G Ravindra Kumar and was attended by party central leaders A B Bardan, Shamim Saizi, MP Suravaram Sudhakara Reddy and party state president K Narayana.

The meeting passed resolutions demanding judicial inquiry into the suicide of Afsar Banu a student of Adarsha Nursing College, allegedly due to ragging. The meeting also demanded withdrawal of cases registered against student leaders and treatment to students and leaders of CPI, who were injured in the lathicharge.

The Student organisations AISF, NSUI, SFI and ABVP were jointly agitating against the alleged ragging of the student, who committed suicide.

Three criminals escape from jail

Koderma, Mar 8 (UNI) Three prisoners escaped from the district jail here on the Ranchi-Patna road (NH 31), in Jharkhand's Koderma district last night, police said today. Arvind Raut, who has more than 40 cases of kidnap and murder against him was lodged in Bihar and Jharkhand jails, along with two of his accomplices. They escaped by cutting the rods of their cells. Around eight days back, Arvind was shifted to the district jail here from Hazaribagh central jail on remand......

HC reserves order on JMM leader Shibu Soren's bail plea

New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) The Delhi High Court today reserved its order after the arguments on the bail plea of former Union Coal Minister Shibu Soren, awarded life imprisonment for conspiring to murder his private secretary. A bench of Justice Manmohan Sarin and S L Bhayana reserved the order after the CBI concluded his arguments opposing grant of bail to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha(JMM) chief. Additional Solicitor General(ASG) Amarendra Saran appearing for the CBI said Soren should not be.....

Man held for killing son-in-law for dowry

Vadodara, Mar 8 (UNI) A tribesman killed his son-in-law after the latter allegedly failed to make full payment of Rs 45,000 as dowry, a custom still prevalent in some tribal communities in Gujarat. Three years ago, 35-year-old Galia Nayak of Rangpur village under Chhotaudepur taluka had married accused Moji Rathwa's daughter with a promise to pay him Rs 45,000 in cash as dowry. According to Rangpur police sources, Galia, who was working as a labour, was brutally killed on Monday.....
