Assistant commissioner sent to jail

Patna, Feb 24 (UNI) Special vigilance judge of Patna S P N Singh today remanded an assistant commissioner of commercial taxes and a tout in judicial custody in a bribery case.

During the day accused assistant commissioner of commercial taxes in Gaya circle Kapildev Singh anda tout Sidhanath Prasad Munib were produced by the officials of vigilance bureau before the designated judge who sent them to jail till March 9 next.

According to the charges accused were arrested by the bureau while accepting grafts of Rs 6500 from a medicine vendor.

Meanwhile, the judge Mr Singh turned down the regular bail plea of Mahthawa branch manager of Kosi Kshetriya Gramin Bank in Araria district, Arun Chandra Gupta and a peon Rabindra Kumar Sah in a bribery case. Both the accused were arrested by bureau sleuths on January 23 last while accepting a illegal graft of Rs 1000 from a farmer to release his loan amount.

Mizo ministerial staff demand promotion in selection grade

Aizawl, Feb 27 (UNI) Mizoram Ministerial Service Assistant Association has demanded promotion of non-gazetted administrative officers in selection grade catagory. Association's statement pointed out that the ministrial officers should be promoted under quota system as soon as the upper level officer posts fall vacant. A smuggler arrested alongwith 5.4 kg charas in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 24 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested a smuggler and 5.4 kg of high quality charas in south Kashmir, a police spokesman said. He said a police party conducted a search operation on a tip off in the house of one Ghulam Mohammad Reshi at Waghama, Bijbehara, this morning. 30 wounded as AMU students open fire

Aligarh, Feb 24 (UNI) At least 30 persons, including 14 policemen, were grievously wounded when Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students resorted to firing and stone pelting here today. Police said the incident occurred in Jakria area, where a builder and an AMU student fought over a dispute, which snowballed and the students torched builder's house, several other shops and a police outpost.
