Tipaimukh dam construction faces opposition

Imphal, Feb 23 (UNI) The construction of Tipaimukh dam in Manipur has been opposed by various organisations here despite Dr Manmohan Singh's assurance that it will be constructed.

The dam, after its construction, will be able to produce 1500 mw of power.

Advocate and former Member of Manipur Human Rights Commission Kh Chonjohn Singh said his clients Singongpou Pamei and Aram Pamei had informed the Union Environment Ministry about the pending PIL in Gauhati High Court, in which various important issues of public importance about the dam was involved.

Besides, those questions of public importance raised in the Written Petition copy had already been delivered through the Central Government Standing Counsel in the High Court. Mr Singh said his clients had now discovered existence of a letter written by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests to the General Manager, NEEPCO, over the dam issue.

With a view to avoiding any further problem relating to the construction of the project during the pendency of the PIL, he requested refraining from going ahead with the process of environmental clearance consideration on the Tipaimukh Hydro-electric Multipurpose Project till the disposal of the PIL.

16 teachers accused of helping exmaniees cheat suspended

Chatra, Feb 23 (UNI) Sixteen teachers who were found helping matriculation examinees to cheat were suspended in Jharkhand's Chatra district today. Regional Deputy Director of Education Nagendra Thakur suspending the erring teachers, said departmental inquiry would be initiated against them. According to him, the incidents occurred at Indumati Tibrewal Saraswati Vidya Mandir and Chatra College where the said teachers instead of guarding were allegedly helping students indulge in unfair menas to answer the questions inside the exam hall. Tax officer arrested while accepting bribe

Gaya, Feb 23 (UNI) Bihar vigilance sleuths today arrested assistant commercial tax commissioner Kapildev Singh while accepting bribe of Rs 6,500 from a businessman. Official sources said the police conducted an operation to arrest the tax officer red handed. Fruit seller shot dead

Patna, Feb 23(UNI) One person was shot dead by unidentified miscreants near Bhaluhipur More in Bhojpur district today. Police here today said the criminals opened fire on fruit seller Nabibullah when he was on his way to his residence from Ara railway station. The victim died on the spot. ''Motive behind the killing is being investigated,'' police said.
