Railways pay compensation to Samjhauta victim in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 23 (UNI) The Railways today paid interim compensation to the next of the kin of Yasmeena Qureshi, who died in the Samjhauta express blast at Panipat in Haryana.

Official sources said an official of the Northern Railway arrived here from Delhi and paid an interim relief of Rs 85,000 in cash to Mohammad Maqbool Qureshi, the husband of Yasmeena.

It was an interim relief and the full compensation announced by the Railway minister Lalu Prasad will be paid separately, the official said.

Yasmeena. who was on way to Lahore to meet her children, was the only Kashmiri woman who was killed in the train blast. Her boby was brought here and laid to rest at Pantha chowk.

Soldier, 3 Lashkar militants killed in J

Srinagar, Feb 23 (UNI) Three militants and a soldier were killed and four security personnel wounded while security forces arrested a militant in Jammu and Kashmir overnight, an official spokesman said. He said security forces and the police launched a joint operation at Mohalla Manyal Gali in Rajouri district of Jammu region this morning following a tip off that some militants were hiding there. He said during the operation' an encounter ensued in which two militants of the Pakistan based Lashker-e-Toiba.....

Oppn walkout over inaction against criminals

Bhopal, Feb 23 (UNI) The opposition Congress today staged a walkout in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly over abduction of government officials by a BJP office-bearer and his friends during cooperative elections in Bhind district. Dr Govind Singh, who raised the issue through a calling attention notice, alleged BJP district general secretary Ambreesh Sharma and his friends had abducted Agriculture Development Officer Suratram Jatav during cooperative elections in Raun area two days back. He alleged some other instances of abduction.....

Bhattarai lauds India's role in restoring peace in Nepal

Varanasi, Feb 23 (UNI) Former Nepalese Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai today praised India's role in ''restoration'' of democracy and peace in the Himalayan Kingdom. The veteran Nepali leader was addressing a function organised by Centre for Nepal Studies, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) here. ''India has played an integral role in my life. I have always been inspired by luminaries including Mahatama Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru and Ram Manohar Lohia,'' observed the BHU alumnus. Nepali Congress leader Pradip Giri also lauded.....
