Potti Sreeramulu Telugu varsity convocation on Feb 26

Hyderabad, Feb 23 (UNI) Governor Rameshwar Thakur would preside over the tenth convocation of the Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University to be held here on February 26.

University Vice-Chancellor A Manjulatha told newspersons that former Supreme Court Judge Justice M Jagannadham would be the chief guest on the occasion.

As many as 1000 students would receive degree certificates while M Phil would be awarded to 85 and Ph D to 40.

She said Mr Thakur, who is also the Chancellor of the University, would present 32 gold medals to the outstanding students, during the convocation.

Ms Manjulatha said four Doctorates would be presented on the convocation. Kalipatnam Rama Rao (Literature), Hemalath Lavanam (Social worker), G S Varadachari (Journalism) and A Radhakrishna Raju (Services to outside Telugu people) would receive the Doctorates.

She said the university had decided to introduce Master's Degree in Journalism, certificate courses in Kuchipudi and Music from this year and five-year integrated degree course on Telugu Literature from the next academic year.

The university would be shifted to the new premises at Bachupalli in Ranga Reddy district by June 2008. The Government had allotted 100 acres of land and the authorities had already constructed two buildings at a cost of Rs 1.80 crore. She said the university would take up the administrative building at a cost of Rs three crore.

The Vice-Chancellor said the hostel would be shifted to new premises but the evening classes would be conducted at the old premises only.

She said the university, having schools in Warangal, Rajahmundry, Kuchipudi and in Srisailam, was striving hard to popularise music, dance, Telugu Literature and folk arts by offering courses on these subjects.

The university had prepared short-term Telugu courses for children of NRIs to enhance their knowledge of the language, she added.

Cong MLA summoned to court on Apr 7

Bangalore, Mar 3 (UNI) A local Court today issued summons to Congress MLA from Channapatna C P Yogeswara to appear on April seven in connection with the alleged false information furnished before the Lok Ayukta. According to a note issued by the Lok Ayukta office here, the Registrar filed a complaint under Section 200 of the Criminal Procedure Code before the Eighth Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, who took cognizance of the matter and issued summons. The Registrar's action followed.....

Journalists stage rasta-roko

Tirupati, Feb 23 (UNI) Journalists of various news papers and electronic media have staged rasta-roko at busy four pillar junction in the temple town today, protesting against the G O 938. About 60 of them, led by Chittoor District Journalist Union President Giridhar and District APWJU Secretary Shanmukha Reddy, earlier in the morning took out a procession from Tirupati press club to four pillar junction. They raised slogans against the G O, allegedly brought by the state government to curb Freedom.....

CCB seizes pirated VCDs, DVDs, arrests seven

Chennai, Mar 3 (UNI) Central Crime Branch (CCB) officials seized pirated VCDs and DVDs of several Tamil movies worth Rs 28 lakh and arrested seven people. CCB Assistant Commissioner Dharmaraj told reporters here today that acting on a tip off, four special teams conducted raids at Burma Bazaar and Vadapalani areas and seized 5500 VCDs and DVDs of Tamil movies including latest films like 'Paruthi Veeran', 'Deepavali' and 'Veyil'. The team also confiscated DVD recording machines and arrested seven people.....
