New investments in power sector to sustain energy security

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) With energy security fast becoming an integral part for sustaining growth in the country, President A P J Abdul Kalam today said the government has taken important steps to help develop the full potential of civilian nuclear energy and all sources of renewable energy.

In his address to the parliament, the President said to sustain growth process there is a need to ensure energy security, accelerated economic development while growing demand for commercial energy requires a new paradigm of energy security for India.

''There is urgent need for a national consensus on energy pricing and distribution policies,'' Dr Kalam said.

He said the government is concious of the need to augment energy supplies from both conventional and renewable sources.

The coal sector he said will continue to remain the mainstay of energy security for the country and said it is imperative that coal production is substantially increased in the coming years.
