Militants fire at polling station, 40 per cent polling

Imphal, Feb 23 (UNI) Unidentifed gunmen fired at a polling station in Tamenglong, some 150 kms from here, disrupting voting, even as 40 per cent voting reported in first five hours as Manipur's third and final phase elections for remaining 12 assembly segments began at 0700 hours today.

According to a preliminary estimate about 40 per cent polling was reported till 1200 hours.

Polling in other booths in three districts of Churachandpur, Tamenglong, Chandel districts and Jiribam sub divisions went on peacefully, state election office here said.

The polling would continue till 1530 hours.

Barring some stray incidents there were no major violence reported so far.

A report reaching here said suspected ultras fired indiscriminately disrupting polling at booth no 52/1 at Tamenglong district.

However, there was no immediate report of casualty in the firing.

Detail reports were awaited.

Reang refugees start agitation

Agartala, Feb 23 (UNI) At least 250 Reang Tribal refugees observed a mass demonstration near Circuit House here today in support of its 17-point Charter of demands. Refugee leader L V S Chorki said the refugees organised the week-long sit in demonstration to draw the attention of the Centre about the problems faced by them in the state. A large number of Reang Tribals deserted their homes in Mizoram due to ethnic disturbances and took shelter in temporary camps set up.....

UCIL released Rs 4.65 crore to KHADC for road construction

Shillong, Feb 23 (UNI) The Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), Jaduguda, has released Rs 4.65 crore out of Rs 10 crore to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for construction of the 20 km road from Wahkaji to Mawthabah village in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills district, a UCIL statement said today. The statement signed by UCIL Superintendent (Geology) S F Kharlyngdoh said the money released to the KHADC includes land compensation to the landowners, earthwork, gradient leveling, laying.....

Orissa police seize huge amount of gelatin sticks

Berhampur, Feb 23 (UNI) Police today seized 400 highly explosive gelatin sticks concealed in 20 packets and ten bags of urea from an auto-rickshaw near Pokudibandha Square, ten kms from here. These explosives were suspected to be meant for the Naxal activities, according to Berhampur Superintendent of Police Dayal Gangwar. Police have arrested Chiranjivi Mandal, the driver of the auto rickshaw and vehicle owner Hina Mandal. The gelatin sticks had its origin from Nagpur with 'Neo Gelatin 90 Amin.....
