Govt to encourage public-private parnership in tourism

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today said the government would encourage public-private partnership in tourism across the country with a view to improving the quality of infrastructure to cash in on the booming industry.

''Tourism has enormous potential and we are already seeing its benefits,'' he said while addressing the joint session of Parliament.

Dr Kalam said there had been an impressive growth in recent months in foreign tourists arrivals, foreign exchange earnings and employment generation.

He, however, emphasised that much more had to be done to increase the number of domestic as well as foreign tourists, given the potential of tourism and India's rich heritage and diversity.

Govt committed to judicial reforms: Kalam

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today asserted that the Government is committed to judicial reforms to speed up the justice delivery system and ensure greater efficiency, transparency and integrity. In his address to the joint session of Parliament, the President said a new bill for setting up the National Judicial Council for greater accountability and transparency in the judiciary has already been tabled in Parliament. Moreover, Grameen Nyayalay Bill for setting up people-friendly local courts.....

Defence 'unshakeable commitment' of government : Kalam

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today described Defence as an ''unshakeable commitment'' of the government and said focus would be maintained on strengthening the Armed Forces. In his address to both Houses of Parliament, the President said that at a time when new and unconventional threats to national security were increasingly visible, the government would maintain focus on strengthening the country's defence and the Armed Forces would be provided with the best possible means.....

President indicates Sachar Report implementation in offing

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) President APJ Abdul Kalam in his Address to the joint sitting of Parliament today gave ample indication that the action on the much-debated report of the Sachar Committee on the backwardness of Muslims was in the offing. He announced that the Government was considering the formulation of a programme for those districts and towns that have highest concentration of minority population. ''Certain minority communities continue to remain relatively backward, with a large number of out-of-school.....
