New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) The Government will consider, without amending the Constitution, the proposal of an all party meeting to have minimum 100 days sittings of Parliament in a year.

A consensus among the political parties on the issue emerged at a meeting convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee this afternoon.

Sources disclosed the Speaker said that he had no objection to their proposal. A formal request would be made by the Speaker to the Government to consider the proposal.

BJP Parliamentary Party spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra said it was the prerogative of the Government to decide how many sittings Parliament should have.

The Government, sources said, was not keen to bring about any constitutional amendment but agreed to look into their proposal.

CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said his party had mooted the idea of having 100 days sittings in a calendar year in the larger interest of healthy democratic set up which was supported by CPM leader Basudeb Acharia and all other parties.

Mr Dasgupta said that there could be a "proper debate on the important issues concerning the man in the street" only if Parliament had minimum 100 sittings in a year.
