General strike affects life in Manipur

Imphal, Feb 23 (UNI) A 12-hour strike called by the Joint Action Committee to protest the death of a pregnant woman in a regional hospital affected life here today.

The JAC, supported by All Manipur Student's Union, Kabui Mothers Association, had called the bandh following the death of M Sangkhu at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Imphal on February 19.

However, polling in the 12 Assembly constituencies was not affected by the strike, election officials said.

RIMS Director Prof L Fimate said a committee has been set up to probe the death of the woman.

FIEO says supportive tax regime vital for reaching export target

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) Ahead of the budgetary proposals, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) today called for a "supportive tax regime" to sustain India's export growth tempo which has been growing at an average of 24 per cent in the past three years and to capture a global market share of two per cent by 2010. A ''supportive tax regime'' was vital for exports in view of limited infrastructure facilities available and inherently high transaction costs to retain.....
