118 year old Hizla mela begins

Dumka, Feb 23 (UNI) Jharkhand Deputy Chief Minister Stephen Marandi today inaugurated the century-old 'Hizla mela' organised at the bank of Mayurakshi river in this district.

The fair was first organised in 1890 by the then Deputy Commissioner of Santhal Pargana John R Casteyrs in order to provide people and the government a common platform for interaction.

The eight-day long fair would conclude on March 2.

Stalls from various government departments and non-governmental organisation had been established.

Besides, cultural programmes, including traditional Santhali dance and drama, would be an added attraction.

State Agriculture Minister Nalin Soren was also present in the function.

Alappuzha, Mar 12 (UNI) Noted agriculture expert M S Swaminathan continued his visit to this district for the second day today, talking to a cross-section of farmers, coconut cultivators and representatives of the milk and poultry sectors. Fulbright scholars find red tapism as main hurdle in India
