Tasgaon Congress leader to join NCP

Sangli, Maharashtra, Feb 22 (UNI) Sanjay Patil, a Congress leader from Tasgaon taluka in this district, has announced his decision to quit the party and join the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Mr Patil told reporters here today that he and his supporters will support NCP candidates in next month's zilla parishad and panchayat samiti elections.

He said he wishes to join hands with Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil for the all-round development of the Tasgaon taluka and Sangli district.

Incidentally, Mr Patil has been a strong opponent of the deputy chief minister for almost two decades and had also contested the assembly elections, though unsuccessfully, against Mr R R Patil.

Former Congress MLA from Atpadi, Rajendra Deshmukh, is also likely to join the NCP.

Convene a consensus meet on SSC

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Feb 22 (UNI) The Aurangabad division bench of the Bombay High Court here today observed that the State Election Commission (SEC) should convene a meeting of the state education secretary, government representative and secretary of the state higher secondary certificate examination board in connection with the clashing of dates of SSC and HSC examination with the ensuing Zilla Parishad elections in the state. The division bench comprising Justice N H Patil and Justice R M Borde made the observation.....

Congress suspends Sanjay Patil

Mumbai, Feb 22 (UNI) Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Prabha Rau has suspended Sanjay Patil of Tasgaon District, Sangli, for anti-party activities. A release issued here by the party said there were several complaints about Mr Patil's anti-party activities which he did not stop despite being given the warnings. Sources said Patil had contested against deputy chief minister R R Patil in 2004 assembly elections as an independent candidate in Tasgaon. Later he joined Congress. UNI.....

Loot attempt in Union Bank; watchman attacked

Surat, Feb 24 (UNI) A watchman at the ATM centre of the Union Bank was attacked by a few dacoits after an attempt to loot the centre had failed, on Udhna-Magdella Road near South Gujarat University. According to police, a three-member gang entered the ATM counter of Union Bank and asked the watchman of the bank Kumvarsingh Sriramnath Jathak(35) to hand over the key of the ATM machine room yesterday.
