Panchayat chief murdered

Tiruchirapalli, Feb 22 (UNI) A panchayat president was hacked to death by a five-member armed gang at Kilikkoodu here today.

Special Branch Police sources said Kilikkoodu Panchayat President S Ranganathan was stopped by the gang while he was on way to his office on a motorcycle.

The gang attacked him with sickles killing Ranganathan on the spot.

Police suspect previous enmity with Ex-President Balakrishnan as the reason behind the murder.

Samayapuram Tollgate Police have registered a case and launched a search for Balakrishnan and four of his associates.

Tension prevailed in Kilikkoodu and Kavutharasanalllur Village--the victim's native-- due to the incident. Police pickets were posted to prevent any untoward incidents.

Hoax call delays Ratnagiri Express

Mumbai, Feb 23 (UNI) A hoax call that a bomb was planted in the Ratnagiri Express delayed its departure by over an hour at Thane station on the Central Railway early today. Railway Police sources told UNI that the control room had received a call at 0520 hrs, saying that a bomb had been planted inside the train. A thorough search by armed police personnel and sniffer dog teams did not yield anything. The Ratnagiri Express left the Thane station.....

Nagpur ZP Health Officer, cashier in ACB net

Nagpur, Feb 23 (UNI) The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) here has arrested a Health Officer and a cashier of Nagpur Zilla Parishad (ZP) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a medical officer for releasing his salary and non-practising allowance (NPA). Additional Superintendent of Police (ACB) Kishore Bele told UNI that cashier Digamber Wankhede was arrested last evening after he accepted the money from Dr Vinod Waghmare, a medical officer posted at the primary health centre in Kanholibara.....

TADA court debars media

Mumbai, Feb 23 (UNI) A TADA court, which conducted trial of the 1993, serial bomb blasts case, today debarred the media from attending its post-lunch proceedings on submissions made by police and jail officials. Judge Pramod Kode issued the gag order when police and jail authorities informed the court that mediapersons were speaking to the blasts' case convicts in the Arthur road jail premises where the designated court is located for security reasons.
